What you should know about erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is part of the more general condition of impotence which is used to describe a number of different symptoms affecting the ability of men to engage in sexual intercourse and to reproduce, including:
  • performance anxiety;
  • low levels of sex drive;
  • difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection;
  • premature ejaculation; or
  • failure to achieve an orgasm.

A recent survey among men in the USA canvassed their concerns about sexual performance. The data ranked their fears as:

  • finding no pleasure in sex 8.1%;
  • lack of, or low levels of, sexual desire 15.8%;
  • anxiety about the ability to perform sexual 17%; and
  • premature ejaculation 28.5%.

Dealing more particularly with ED, the most common causes are:

  • the adverse effects of medications;
  • high cholesterol levels;
  • diabetes;
  • problems affecting blood pressure; and
  • heart disease.
For those men who have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer, the effects of the surgery or subsequent radiation therapy can reduce the ability to have an erection. This reinforces the general rule that anything causing damage to the nerves or impairing the flow of blood in the penis itself and groin area may cause ED. Whether in combination with physical causes or independently, psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety and, in some cases, anger can cause ED.

Despite the extent of the possible causes, ED is considered treatable at any age. The reliability and effectiveness of the available treatments have encouraged men to talk more openly about their problems and, after receiving that treatment, almost all are able to resume full sexual activity.

Anxiety about sex

There is such a thing as a self-fulfilling prophesy. In this case, anxiety about whether you will be able to perform sexually often produces the feared inability. For slightly different emotional reasons, your desire to have sex with your partner may decline when you are having problems in your long-term relationship. Both situations may begin to teach your body new habits. You may be learning not to be excited, not simply by your immediate partner but by all women. Your fear can feed into a general loss of sexual appetite. Sexual desire is often dictated by your mood. If something disturbs the emotional link in your mind between pleasure and sex, your interest in sex will tend to diminish. For this reason, it is quite common for those suffering from the more serious depressive illnesses and schizophrenia to experience ED.
